You of course!
A lot of people are motivated by money, popularity, or pride. Me, I’m motivated to stop the hate, the hate people have for math.
My students are the reason I got into social media in the first place. They totally believed me and embraced my math nerdiness creating mathematician bios on MySpace (and not just creating them, but chatting in character…at length). The journey continued as they dragged me to facebook with the intention of easy access to my Kevil Notes when they left the nest and started the next chapter in their lives at college (and Farmville). Now my sister-in-law has encouraged me to gently remind my friends of the importance and everyday applications of math that we forget because we don’t use them on a daily basis.
My “Dream Reader” is anyone that gets that knot in their belly or ringing in their ears at the mention of math. I want people to be in awe of the subject (not scared of it) and for them to encourage the young people in their lives to embrace and appreciate what math (or any continued academic curiosity) can do for them. I intend to incorporate Math Minutes and you can get even more smarter (just kidding, Andrea – don’t beat me with the ruler) and get lots of academic tidbits if you like us on facebook. Here’s a preview of topics to come: Get yer math on!
And yes, I’m the nerd that named her daughter after a fractal.

Ok, I’ll bite. What is an imaginary number?
Normally biting isn’t nice, but in this case it’s perfectly acceptable!
i (or imaginary numbers) = √-1
So, think about the answer to √25…5 right? That’s only half right. (There are actually 2 answers to every square root problem.) √25 = +5 and -5
So imaginary numbers come into play when you take the square root of a negative number, because there isn’t anything times itself that can get you a negative (-) * (-) = + and (+) * (+) = +
The answer to √-25 has 2 answers – +5i and -5i (that’s the short version because I know your eyes started to glaze over at “think about the answer to…” 😉
