Pretend to be Nice

Teacher-Moms, on the edge…

*Bad pun alert* Sub officers don’t like crew cuts (but he likes his Dad’s).

Today is submarine day!

fordbubbaI have the coolest son (don’t tell Scott because I tell him the same thing).  My oldest, Ford, is a submariner and I couldn’t be more proud.  I would love to tell you about his first duty, but then I’d have to kill you…or he’d kill me, that’s probably why I get the watered down version because he knows I have a big mouth.

My knowledge of nuclear subs and what his actual duties are is very limited, but I’m sure it’s just like The Hunt for Red October except he’s not Russian.  (But he is equally as handsome as Alec Baldwin.)  I won’t bore you with all the fabulous things he’s accomplished (there are too many I can’t remember them all) and I know someone reading this will be a Naval expert and shun me for my lack of technical vocabulary, so I will play the mom card and tell you mushy stuff instead.

It was a rocky road in the beginning being the mean-‘ole-stepmom but we muscled through.  I made him put his dishes in the dishwasher, he had to actually do his homework (because I checked it), and he thanked God the other 6 days of the week that he didn’t live with us because my expectations were ridiculous!  Like the time he wanted to earn extra money by washing all the windows and reminded him repeatedly that I would inspect them and how picky I was and how I would only pay for the ones I was happy with.  After about 4 hours he walked away with $1.50 and a hard learned lesson.  Or the family meetings where I made it very clear that I would rather he respect me for the rest of his life than like me now.

It really wasn’t that bad.  He always did things that amazed me academically and had the social and emotional maturity of a 35 year old, and now isn’t any different.  He’s the coolest kid I know (with his wife and his youngest brother close seconds) and I can only hope he knows how much I love, admire, and respect him!

Enough with the mush – go clean your room (then have a beer)!
